Timeline of Math Thinkers

Do you know the people who created the main mathematical concepts?

René Descartes
(1596-1650)

René Descartes
(1596-1650)

He created analytical geometry in the 17th century. He is considered the father of modern mathematics, as well as founder of modern philosophy. The Cartesian chart was baptized in his honor. Analytical geometry revolutionized mathematics, facilitating visual comprehension between abstract numbers and concepts. He was one of the key figures in the Scientific Revolution between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

Isaac Newton
(1643-1727)

Isaac Newton
(1643-1727)

He created the calculus in the 17th century. Without calculation, we would not be able to measure the volume of curved objects or calculate the speed of moving objects. He elaborated the law of universal gravitation. He created Newton's 3 laws that grounded classical mechanics. He is considered by the Royal Society the scientist who has made the greatest impact in the history of science.

Leonhard Euler
(1707-1783)

Leonhard Euler
(1707-1783)

He founded the theory of graphs. He did studies in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, astronomy and music theory. In mathematics, he contributed to geometry, infinitesimal calculus, trigonometry, algebra, and number theory. His name is used in Euler's constant.

Thomas Malthus
(1766-1834)

Thomas Malthus
(1766-1834)

He is considered the father of demography. He created a theory for controlling population growth, Malthusianism.

Carl Gauss
(1777-1855)

Carl Gauss
(1777-1855)

He is known as the prince of mathematics. He was the first to prove the law of quadratic reciprocity. He contributed to studies in the areas of statistics, physics, astronomy, differential geometry and geodesy. The Gaussian curve honors him.

Artur Avila
(1979)

Artur Avila
(1979)

He was the first Latin American to receive the Fields Medal. He proved the "Conjecture of the Ten Martinis", on the behavior of the "Schrödinger Operators", mathematical tools linked to quantum physics.
